Chillon Castle
Medieval lakeside castle on Lake Geneva
Chillon Castle, perched on a rocky islet along the shores of Lake Geneva near Montreux, is one of Switzerland’s most iconic and best-preserved medieval fortresses. With its dramatic setting against the backdrop of the Alps and the lake’s shimmering waters, the castle has inspired countless artists and writers, including Lord Byron. Visitors can explore a labyrinth of ramparts, towers, dungeons, and grand halls that reveal centuries of history—from its origins as a Roman outpost to its role as a residence for the Counts of Savoy.
The castle is open year-round, with hours varying by season: April to September from 9 am to 7 pm, March and October from 9:30 am to 6 pm, and November to February from 10 am to 5 pm (closed December 25 and January 1). Admission is CHF 15 for adults and CHF 7 for children aged 6–15, with reduced and family rates available. Audio guides can be rented on-site or downloaded as an app for a small fee, and various discounts are offered for cardholders and group visits.
Inside, detailed exhibits and restored rooms bring the castle’s rich past to life, while the ramparts and windows offer panoramic views of the lake and mountains. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a family, or simply seeking a fairy-tale setting, Chillon Castle provides a memorable journey into Switzerland’s medieval heritage.
