Lake Hallwyl
Lake Hallwil with medieval castle and scenic cruises
Lake Hallwyl (Hallwilersee) is a tranquil gem in the Seetal valley, nestled between the Lucerne hinterland and Lenzburg in the canton of Aargau. Surrounded by protected reed zones and gentle hills, the lake offers a peaceful escape for nature lovers and families. A well-marked, 20-kilometer circular trail follows much of the shoreline, inviting visitors to enjoy leisurely walks or longer hikes with frequent opportunities to combine walking and boating thanks to numerous landing stages.
One of the lake’s highlights is Hallwyl Moated Castle, a historic fortress with engaging exhibitions that bring centuries of regional history to life. The Lake Hallwil Navigation Company, operating for over a century, runs five motor launches that connect lakeside villages and offer a variety of cruises—from regular crossings to themed excursions like Sunday brunch or gourmet rides. The romantic setting also makes the lake a popular choice for wedding excursions.
Bathing beaches and water-sport facilities dot the shoreline, making Lake Hallwyl a favorite for swimming, sailing, and picnicking in summer. As evening falls, the eastern shore village of Meisterschwanden is known for its sunset views, with lakeside restaurants such as Seerose and Delphin providing a scenic spot for dinner. Whether you spend a few hours or a full day, Lake Hallwyl offers a blend of natural beauty, recreation, and local heritage in the heart of Aargau.
