Historic European toy collections in Riehen
MUKS – Museum Kultur & Spiel in Riehen is a family-friendly destination that invites visitors to explore the cultural history of play. Housed in a historic building, the museum features a diverse collection of European toys from the 19th and early 20th centuries, offering a nostalgic journey through childhoods of the past. The permanent exhibitions are organized into three main themes: Technology in the Nursery, Wooden Toys, and The World of Dolls. Highlights include tin cars, model railways, magic lanterns, clay animals, dolls, dollhouses, and miniature stoves and shops, with well-known brands like Steiff, Märklin, and Carlit represented.
The museum is designed to engage visitors of all ages. Children up to 16 enter for free, and rotating special exhibitions ensure there is always something new to discover. The space is partially wheelchair-accessible, with accessible entrance, toilets, and special exhibition rooms. A self-service kiosk and a shop are available, and visitors can relax in the courtyard coffee area beneath a lime tree.
MUKS is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., except on Tuesdays and certain holidays. Free admission is offered on the first Sunday of each month to holders of various museum passes and to individuals with protected status or refugee permits. Whether you’re a toy enthusiast, a family seeking an educational outing, or simply curious about the history of play, MUKS provides a welcoming and interactive experience in the heart of Riehen.
