Zytglogge (Clock Tower)
Medieval clock tower with hourly mechanical show
The Zytglogge, or Clock Tower, is one of Bern’s most iconic landmarks and a central feature of the city’s UNESCO-listed Old Town. Originally built as a city gate in the 13th century, the tower has served various roles over the centuries and now stands as a symbol of Bern’s medieval heritage. Located in the heart of the lower Old Town, the Zytglogge draws visitors with its striking astronomical clock and the famous mechanical puppet show that plays out every hour on the hour. Dancing bears, a jester, a golden rooster, and Cronos—the god of time—delight onlookers as they mark the passage of time.
Inside, the tower offers a fascinating glimpse into medieval engineering, with thick stone walls, solid wooden beams, and a still-functioning clock mechanism. Guided tours are available, providing access to the interior and the chance to climb the 130 steps to the top. From the viewing platform, you’re rewarded with panoramic views over Bern’s red-tiled rooftops, winding alleyways, and, on clear days, the distant peaks of the Bernese Oberland.
The Zytglogge is open daily, with tours offered in multiple languages and accessible to visitors with various needs. Whether you come for the hourly show or to explore the tower’s inner workings, the Zytglogge offers a memorable journey into Bern’s rich history and vibrant city life.
