Abbey District & Abbey Of St. Gall (St. Gallen)

UNESCO Abbey with Switzerland’s oldest library

7.2/10
#1 of 3 in St. Gallen

The Abbey District surrounds the UNESCO‑listed Abbey of St. Gall, a living monument that houses Switzerland’s oldest library and a remarkable Baroque hall. Visitors enter the complex between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. (last admission at 4:45 p.m.) every day; the Baroque Hall of the Abbey Library opens a half‑hour earlier, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., but only from 1 August to 31 October 2025 before returning to regular hours. Guided tours run on weekdays from 9 a.m. on request, offering deeper insight into the library’s illuminated manuscripts and the vaulted cellar’s medieval wine storage.

Admission is CHF 18 for adults, CHF 12 for students or apprentices, and free for children under 16 with a parent. Groups of ten or more receive reduced rates, and holders of the Swiss Museum Pass, Swiss Travel Pass, or local museum cards enter at no charge. An audio guide costs an extra CHF 5. All exhibition spaces are wheelchair‑accessible, with in‑house wheelchairs available; strollers must be left at the entrance. Private photography is permitted without flash, tripod or selfie stick, while professional filming requires permission.

Plan ahead for occasional closures—exhibitions pause 10 Nov–24 Nov 2025, 24–25 Dec 2025, 25–26 Feb 2026, and 20 Apr 2026—so you can fully enjoy the Abbey’s historic atmosphere and its serene courtyard.
