Barenplatz (Bern)
Historic bear square transformed into modern park
Bärenplatz, or Bear Square, is a central public square in Bern with a unique historical connection to the city’s iconic bears. Established in 1513, Bärenplatz originally served as the location for Bern’s first bear enclosure, reflecting the bear’s status as a symbol of the city. For over three centuries, live bears were kept here, drawing the curiosity of locals and visitors alike. In 1857, the bears were relocated to the larger Bear Pit (Bärengraben) on the edge of the Old Town, and today, Bern’s bears reside in the spacious and modern Bärenpark along the Aare River.
While Bärenplatz no longer houses bears, it remains a lively hub in Bern’s city center. The square is surrounded by historic buildings, shops, and cafés, making it a popular meeting point and a gateway to the Old Town’s attractions. Its open space often hosts markets, public events, and seasonal festivities, adding to the vibrant city atmosphere.
A stroll through Bärenplatz offers a glimpse into Bern’s past and present. The square’s name and history are a reminder of the city’s enduring relationship with its animal mascot. Today, Bärenplatz is a convenient starting point for exploring Bern’s UNESCO-listed Old Town, with easy access to nearby landmarks, shopping streets, and public transport connections.
