Grossmünster (Zürich)
Romanesque church and Reformation landmark in Zürich
The Grossmünster stands on the Limmat’s western bank, its twin towers framing Zürich’s historic Old Town. Inside, the Romanesque nave offers a quiet space for contemplation; entry is free and the church remains open year‑round. In summer (1 Mar – 31 Oct) visitors can explore from 10 am to 6 pm, while winter hours run 10 am to 5 pm; on Sundays the doors open at 12:30 pm and services begin at 10 am in German.
Climbing the Karlsturm, the south tower, requires 187 steps and costs CHF 5 for adults (CHF 2 for children, adolescents under 17 or students). From the top, a 360° panorama sweeps over the city, Lake Zürich and the distant Alps. The tower fee also grants a CHF 5 discount on the “Getruckt zů Zürich” Bible‑collection exhibition, which is open 12 pm–5 pm in summer and 12 pm–4 pm in winter (closed Mondays and Tuesdays).
Organ concerts punctuate the season every Saturday from 16 Aug to 4 Oct, with two sessions (10 am–11:30 am and 1:15 pm–6 pm). Live‑streamed services are available online for those who cannot attend in person.
While renovation work preserves the medieval fabric, the church and its tower stay fully accessible. A weekday morning visit usually means fewer crowds, and the surrounding Niederdorf streets provide cafés, fountains and other historic churches to explore after your climb.
