Lindenhof (Zürich)
Historic hilltop park with panoramic city views
Lindenhof sits on a gentle rise in the heart of Zürich’s Old Town, offering a quiet green oasis just steps from the bustling streets. The park opens 24 hours a day and admission is free, making it an easy stop at any time of day. From the terrace you can sweep your gaze across the iconic Grossmünster spires, the winding Limmat River, Lake Zürich and, on clear days, the distant Alps.
The site carries layers of history: a 4th‑century Roman fort once guarded the settlement, a 9th‑century palace built by Charlemagne’s grandson later stood here, and in 1798 the oath that sealed the Helvetic Constitution was taken on this very ground. Today locals and travelers alike use the space for leisurely strolls, impromptu chess games, and occasional petanque tournaments.
Bring a camera to capture the panoramic cityscape, and consider pausing on a bench to watch the river flow beneath the historic bridges. The surrounding cobblestones lead you toward the Grossmünster, City Hall and the University of Zürich, so a short walk can turn a brief pause into a fuller exploration of Zürich’s medieval core. Lindenhof remains Zürich’s oldest public park—a tranquil viewpoint where history and everyday life meet.
