Rhine Gorge (Swiss Grand Canyon)
Dramatic Alpine gorge with scenic rail and trails
The Rhine Gorge—often called the “Swiss Grand Canyon”—lies just a short ride from Chur in the Graubünden Alps. Towering limestone cliffs plunge down to the turquoise Rhine, creating a dramatic landscape that feels both wild and accessible. The Rhaetian Railway threads through the gorge, so a simple train journey from Chur offers panoramic windows onto the sheer walls; the famous Glacier Express also passes this stretch on its Chur‑Zermatt route, letting you admire the scenery without leaving your seat.
For a closer look, a dedicated Rhine‑Gorge bus runs between Versam and Reichenau, with seats in a convertible cabriolet that open to the fresh mountain air. Along the gorge’s rim, several viewing platforms and even barbecue spots invite a pause for a snack or a picnic while you soak in the view.
Hikers can choose from well‑marked trails such as Versam–Valendas, Reichenau–Trin Station, or the short climbs to Wackenau Ruin, Bot Tschavier and Turnerweg (all around 656 m). Cyclists and mountain‑bike enthusiasts follow Cycling No. 2 Rhine Route (Disentis‑Chur stage) or join local mountain‑bike tours. For a blend of sport and food, the e‑Bike Culinary Trail rides from Flims Dorf to Valendas, stopping at three restaurants, while the “Forest and Water” hike leads to Crestasee with similar dining breaks.
Whether you glide past the gorge by rail, hike its trails, or ride a bike along its edge, the Rhine Gorge offers a compact yet unforgettable Alpine adventure.
