Roman-era breeds and biodiversity conservation

The Animal Park and Biodiversity Area at Augusta Raurica offers visitors a unique glimpse into Roman-era animal husbandry while promoting modern conservation values. Located near the ancient city wall on the eastern side of the archaeological site, the park is home to breeds that would have been familiar to the Romans—such as woolly pigs, Valais Country Sheep, Nera Verzasca goats, and a variety of colorful poultry and waterfowl. These animals are kept in enclosures designed to reflect historical practices, providing an educational experience for all ages.

The park is also a living example of biodiversity preservation. In partnership with organizations like ProSpecieRara and the Basel University IPAS department, the park participates in breeding programs for endangered species, including the capercaillie, and provides habitat for red-list species like the turtle dove and yellow-bellied toad. A small exhibition in the Panorama Pavilion explains daily life around the Roman city gate, further connecting the past with the present.

Visitors are welcome to enjoy the numerous seating areas and picnic tables scattered throughout the park, making it a pleasant stop for families and groups. Entry is free of charge, and the park is open year-round except for a few holidays in December and January. The Animal Park and Biodiversity Area at Augusta Raurica is both a step back in time and a celebration of ongoing efforts to protect rare breeds and local wildlife.
