Fontana Park
Historic Baroque garden with century-old trees
Fontana Park is a peaceful green oasis in the heart of Chur, offering locals and visitors a welcome escape from the city’s lively streets. Located on Grabenstrasse, the park traces its roots to a Baroque garden that once graced the estate of Fortunat Sprecher von Bernegg, a prominent 16th-century lawyer and Austrian chancellor. The current layout, shaped by a recent refurbishment, respects the original garden’s boundaries while introducing contemporary plantings—alternating flower beds, boxwood borders, and potted plants—that create a vibrant yet tranquil atmosphere.
The park retains the historic length of its flower parterre, and mature European beeches and sycamores provide shade and habitat for birds and insects, making it a favorite spot for nature lovers. Monuments within the park honor both Sprecher von Bernegg and Conradin Zschokke, an engineer known for building roads in Graubünden during the Napoleonic era.
Fontana Park is open daily from 7 am to 9 pm and is free to enter. Benches and quiet corners invite visitors to read, relax, or simply enjoy the greenery. Its central location makes it easily accessible, whether you’re exploring Chur’s old town or seeking a restful pause during your day. With its blend of history, biodiversity, and thoughtful design, Fontana Park is a charming retreat in Switzerland’s oldest city.
